scary clowns and not-so-scary jack-o-lanterns

At the first of the month of October, I'm ready to revisit my classic favorites: Stephen King adaptations, Alfred Hitchcock's cache, too-real-for-comfort movies like "The Strangers," other-worldly spooks like "The Conjuring," even cheesy scares you might find in the bottom half of a Netflix search.

This year, Hollywood is bringing us delights from across the horror spectrum with the new rendition of King's "It," the story of an ancient evil that returns every 27 years in the form of a clown to prey on the children of Derry, Maine (featured above: a less-frightening clown by the name of Jess, age four, who I believe preyed only on candy). On another plane of terror is Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller "mother!" -- possibly the most polarizing movie of 2017 and one that certainly resists clear interpretation.

No matter what's new in theaters, the one scary movie I revisit every year takes the namesake of the occasion: "Halloween" -- the John Carpenter classic that made us all fall in love with Jamie Lee.

Seeing that familiar jack-o-lantern in the opening credits brings back the taste of candy corn and memories of Halloweens passed.

While jack-o-lanterns will always have a place during Halloween, this year, I'm scribbling more than I'm carving. Thanks to ink & flourish, I'm making less spooky, more cutesy pumpkin decorations to pepper living rooms and front stoops.

What you should know:

  • I've got mid-size pumpkins (6"-9") and jack-o-lanterns (10"-14")
  • Mid-size pumpkins run $3-$5; jack-o-lanterns run $5-$10
  • Pumpkins are personalized for you: first names, last names, welcome messages, and other special phrases
  • Pumpkin lettering starts at $5

If you're getting into the Halloween spirit as much as I am, I hope you're enjoying the scare of horror flicks, the slowly-chilling air, and the pumpkins and gourds that seem to have appeared by the hundreds overnight! Let's make good use of those seasonal goodies and scribble something fun on front. My pumpkins are windowsill, mantle-top, and front stoop-ready! ;)
